Study Abroad Checklist for Ethiopian Students

12 months before intake — Shortlist and self-assessment

• Pick 8–15 target universities across a spread of selectivity: 3 stretch, 6 match, 3 safety.
• For each program, note: tuition, English requirement, application deadline, required test scores (DET, IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE).
• Take one free DET practice test to know where you stand.
• Open a spreadsheet — you will use it every week for the next year.

9–11 months before — English proficiency

This is the right window to lock in your English proficiency score. If you leave it too late, a bad first attempt has no room for a retake, and it delays every downstream step.

• Choose your test — DET is fastest and cheapest ($70), TOEFL and IELTS take longer and cost more (~$220).
• Book a consultation with Lingua to plan your prep and reserve your exam session.
• Do 4–6 weeks of structured prep before you sit the exam.
• Sit the test — if your score is within 10 points of target, you are done. If not, retake 30 days later after focused prep.

7–8 months before — Documents

• Transcripts from every school since grade 9 — order official copies now, they can take 4–6 weeks in Ethiopia.
• Recommendation letters — ask 3 professors/teachers in person. Give them your CV and a draft to work from.
• Statement of purpose / personal statement — first draft. Then rewrite three times.
• CV/resume in the format expected by your target country.
• Financial documents — bank statements showing at least one year of program fees + living costs.

5–6 months before — Applications

• Submit applications in the priority order of your shortlist. Do not batch-submit at the last minute — errors get through.
• Pay application fees using an international card or the university's bank transfer option.
• Send your DET/IELTS/TOEFL score directly through the platform to each university.

2–4 months before — Decisions and visa

Admission decisions typically arrive between 6 and 12 weeks after submission. Once you have your acceptance letter, the clock starts on the visa process.

• Pay your enrollment deposit to secure your place.
• Prepare your visa file — I-20 or CAS or DS-2019, sponsor documents, health insurance, English test certificate.
• Book your visa interview.
• Prepare answers about the program, funding, and post-graduation plans.

1 month before — Departure

• Book flights early — Addis to major US/EU hubs get expensive fast in August.
• Arrange initial housing — universities often have booking deadlines for on-campus dorms.
• Health check-ups and vaccines required by your host country.
• Currency exchange strategy — do not carry more than a few hundred dollars in cash.
• Notify Ethio-Telecom and your bank about international use.
